An Ode to Jalajala
Long before the Spaniards asked its name,
this land answered in the tongue of shells and tide —
halaán, they called the harvest of the shore,
and from that gentle misunderstanding, a town was born.
Cradled between the wide waters of Laguna de Bay
and the quiet watch of Mount Sembrano's slopes,
Jalajala has always known how to hold things well —
fisherfolk and farmers, generations of hands
that worked the lake and the land in the same unhurried breath.
Here, the hills roll the way old stories do,
without rushing toward their ending.
Every September, the streets remember how to dance —
color and rhythm carried down from grandparents to grandchildren,
a whole town moving as one to honor what came before it.
This is the same soil, the same lake wind,
the same patient light that led us here —
not to build over this place, but to belong to it a little,
the way it has always belonged to those who stayed to listen.
